In the early nineties,<\/strong> Shahbagh dawned pale and mysterious. It rose like an ancient city from rice-washed waters. Streets glistened as if inked with dust from Nawabi bakharkhani<\/em> and ashes. Stalls at crossings exhaled jasmine, tuberose, marigold. Restaurants thickened the air with parata, paya<\/em>, dim vaja<\/em>, and dal vuna<\/em>. Rickshaws and cars rattled past like iron insects.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

From the crossing, standing<\/strong> before PG Hospital toward TSC, you saw the Northern Road slip toward Bangla Academy and the Science Building. It carried students, teachers, people \u2014 and the hushed footsteps of history itself. By nine o\u2019clock, rickshaws jostled for space. The campus pulsed with the life of a nation anchored at Shahbagh.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dhaka University and Shahbagh <\/strong>bore history\u2019s cruelty. They witnessed resistance, oppression, survival, and pride. <\/span>Shahbagh was never just a marketplace for flowers, food, books, and medicine. It was also an altar of ideas and creative dreams. Writers and thinkers debated over tea, killing kings and generals with words. The tar on the streets around TSC drank blood every decade \u2014 not of clerics\u2019, but of young dreamers\u2019. Socialist Student Union members, Student League, Secular bloggers, DU professors bled on its pavements, etching a red chapter in the history the city could not wash away.<\/span><\/p>\n

Assassins silenced voices<\/strong> one by one. When they struck my teacher, Dr. Humayun Azad, they carved permanent hatred into his face. He survived but lived only half in this world, until death claimed him in a German twilight, six months later.<\/span><\/p>\n

DU Student Union’s 2025 <\/strong>election became a theatre. Rigged stages allowed supporters of Avijit Roy\u2019s killers to take their seats. Since July 2024, 761 armed zealots, along with Jamaat-Shibir and the Islamic Alliance, have been roaming freely in the country, plotting a Caliphate on soil that had chosen freedom a hundred years earlier.<\/span><\/p>\n

A sharp question remains:<\/strong> why did no cleric fall to these assassins? Silence answers. It shows whose hands guided the knives and who threw the bombs and grenades. Many forces contended for Bangladesh\u2019s soul, but none gnawed like the venom of religious politics led by Moudusit, Salafist Jamat E Islam, Islamic Students Shibir, and their Islamic brotherhood in hundred other islamic groups based in Madrasas and Mosques.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then came Sheikh Hasina<\/strong> \u2014 a stubborn flame. Extremists sought her end. Their hatred was absolute \u2014 for her legacy of freedom and democracy, her leadership, her ability to move the nation forward without surrender. She reached even to those who cursed her, bringing the Islamic community into national development. They did not thank her. They vilified her, attacked her. Her light burned brighter in the dark.<\/span><\/p>\n

***<\/span><\/p>\n

We had another woman Prime<\/strong> Minister, Begum Zia. She flared like fire at whispers of her name. People said she bore the face and distance of a queen, the <\/span>Duyo Rrani<\/span><\/em>, a vanished majesty of Bengal. Yet her consort, the Uzir-e-Azam of Bangladesh, could not bear her presence in state functions. He scorned Tagore songs and folk songs, once striking a tabla, declaring it unworthy, favoring the guitar instead.<\/span><\/p>\n

In that same land r<\/strong>ose Sheikh Hasina. Not merely a ruler, but a mother, a sister, a leader woven into the nation\u2019s kinship. Metro pillars still bear the scars of July assaults etched on her mural. A daughter of a martyred assassinated father, survivor of personal and national grief, she became the unyielding architect of a Bangladesh, that is very Bengali.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her tale weaves contradictions:<\/strong> history and aspiration, faith and reason, pragmatism and loyalty to the national cause. Like a helmswoman steering a storm-tossed vessel, she guided Bangladesh through cyclones. Islamists sharpened swords, bombed rallies, and plotted murders. She guided her nation between genocide\u2019s memory and tomorrow\u2019s waves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her story is constant<\/strong> negotiation \u2014 life and death, history and aspiration, faith and secularism, pragmatism and principle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 1971, Bangladesh has<\/strong> wrestled with religious groups’ violent politics. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, her father, envisioned secularism as the backbone of a plural society. He even thought of a socialist economy. The 1972 Constitution promised equality and minority rights. Yet politics bent law and ideology.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ziaur Rahman, in 1977,<\/strong> removed secularism and inserted \u201cabsolute trust in Almighty Allah,\u201d though he was not a practicing Muslim. Later, Islam became the state religion. Despite promises of freedom, this fissured Bangladeshi politics for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Fifteenth Amendment of the constitution attempted<\/strong> reconciliation. Islam remained the state religion; secularism was restored as a principle. After Article 7, article 7 (a) and\u00a0 7(b) were inserted in a bid to end take over of power through unconstitutional means. Nomber of reserve seats for women increased from 45 to 50.\u00a0 Yet equality in law clashed with lived inequality, especially in family law. Women, 51% of the population, inherited less and had fewer rights in divorce. Neo-liberal pressures further widened the gap.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amid this backdrop, Islamists’<\/strong> political networks emerged and the tentacles of Islamic state politics grew. Bangladesh\u2019s political terrain oscillated between secularist ideals and Islamist Caliphate dreams. Early leftist movements never translated grassroots support into power. Military rule under Ziaur Rahman and Ershad allowed Islamist parties, including Jamaat-i-Islami, to campaign and erase their 1971 role. By the 1990s, these parties manipulated global campaigns against Bangladesh, dehumanizing Sheikh Hasina, her Party Awami League, its alliance and secular civil society actors.<\/span><\/p>\n

Islamist parties are not<\/strong> monolithic. Both Muslims and non-Muslims could be \u201cothers\u201d to them. together with them pragmatist opportunists sought influence through elections. Orthodox Madrasa-rooted parties enforced religious orthodoxy in villages, while increased their occassional presence in cities. Militant networks like HuJI-B and JMB, Ansar-Al Islam, Ansarulla Bangla Team reflected both ambitions and anxieties across Bangladesh\u2019s spectrum. Later Jamaatul Fil Hindal al-Sharakiya\u2014the gazwatul Hind Jihadi group\u2014emerged, preparing for possible war against, in their perception “idol-worshippers’ land Hindustan, or India.<\/span><\/p>\n

By the early 2000s, <\/strong>madrasas multiplied. Colleges preaching Islamic regimentation appeared, fuelled by global Islmist network. Violence flared, but Islamists\u2019 electoral footprint remained modest. In 2008, Jamaat-i-Islami won only two parliamentary seats. Their vote share barely rose. Yet their ideology ensured a continuing presence, bolstered by alliances with the BNP.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hasina\u2019s leadership took root in a fraught weave \u2014<\/strong>where religious politics rose like an encroaching tide, Islamist resurgence was carefully nursed by BNP and the Army generals,who silenced\u00a0 veteran freedom fighters devoted to the Constitution’s four principles. Yet the secular dream still shimmered across the counry, refusing to fade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

As we consider the arc <\/b>of her leadership, sheikh Hasina has been a testament to endurance and vision. She is a Bengali woman whose life story is inseparable from the nation she leads\u2014a leader who has risen above personal loss, political tumult, and ideological warfare to steer Bangladesh toward stability and dignity. Her legacy, still in formation, is a chronicle of courage, intellect, and unwavering commitment to the principles that define a free and sovereign nation.<\/span><\/p>\n

She confronted extremism through<\/strong> deliberate policies, not rhetoric. In 2007, when the caretaker government attempted reforms to empower women, Islamist factions mobilized protests. Hasina remained resolute, promoting gender equity, constitutional rights, and legal reform. Her stance was both moral compass and political strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her foreign policy reflected<\/strong> similar balance. In the shadow of global Islamism, post-Afghan geopolitics, and reliance on Middle Eastern labor, she acted decisively. She built ties with the US, Russia, OIC, and Gulf States while asserting sovereignty. Her leadership resembled Angela Merkel or Jacinda Ardern: principled, decisive, attentive to human cost. <\/span><\/p>\n

“Unlike many, she negotiated continually with domestic extremists for inclusiveness.”<\/span><\/h2>\n

Muhammad Yunus, often critical<\/strong> of Bangladesh\u2019s democracy, aligned, intentionally or not, with fundamentalist sympathies. Where Yunus portrayed chaos, Sheikh Hasina embodied constitutional resilience, national progress, and the people\u2019s faith in democracy. She was expected to act as a sentinel of civil society. Yet defending law, order, and reason against extremists exploiting religion, she sought to remain inclusive. Her commitment to inclusivity amid extremism sparked controversy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Domestically, Sheikh Hasina pursued social<\/strong> transformation. She reclaimed <\/span>salish<\/span><\/em> and fatwa from Islamist manipulation. She asserted law while respecting culture. Tradition and reform danced together under her guidance. She ensured legal structures and moral legitimacy aligned. Also this stance made her further unpopular among Islamist groups.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike male Muslim counterparts<\/strong> like\u00a0<\/span>Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan<\/span>, who wield nationalism and religion for Islmaic Emperialist power, Hasina chose a different path. Her leadership emphasizes democratic resilience, social equity, and national progress whilealso respecting ctizens’ religious rights. Her trajectory is unique, balancing principle with pragmatic reform. Yet her strategy reveal that a centrist opposition, nursing fundamentalism, rarely grasps the nation’s best interest and act accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her philosophy recognized the limits <\/b>of power while pushing the boundaries of reform. Shaped by life\u2019s traumas \u2014 assassination attempts, political imprisonment, personal loss \u2014 she governed not merely through authority, but through a narrative of moral courage rooted in the nation\u2019s liberation struggle and the ethical responsibility that flows from it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Even amid current propaganda <\/strong>and Yunus\u2019 vengeance, she upheld secularism, democracy, and security. She knew freedom was fragile and stewardship essential. After the July atrocities, she called for peaceful resistance and self-defense. She defended the nation’s faith in the liberation struggle and its principles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hundreds of thousands of<\/strong> young men and women in her party, all victims of violence, find solace in her words.
\nShe moves among them with<\/strong> voice and presence, though often only through the phone, speaking courage into hearts drained by fear.
\nHour by hour, she<\/strong> helps them lift themselves, regain strength, and hold fast to hope.
\nInspired, citizens <\/strong><\/span>have been<\/strong> gradually rising to reclaim their secular land, step by deliberate step. <\/span><\/p>\n

To them she vows,<\/strong> unwavering, to restore the progress the July conspirators sought to erase, to rebuild what hatred tried to burn away.
\nIn every call, every<\/strong> word, she weaves resilience, and the nation listens,\u00a0<\/span>learning to stand again. <\/span><\/p>\n

Her fight is both symbolic <\/b>and practical: defending the nation from ideological subversion while advancing to let her people reclaim their country back in track from where it can go forward only. Unfortunately, some of the ideological policies that empowered citizens, strengthened institutions, and fostered economic growth, were curtailed by the Interim Government of Muhammad Yunus.<\/span><\/p>\n

The interplay of religion, <\/b>politics, and militancy has left indelible marks on Bangladesh.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yunus\u2019 tenure, while failing<\/strong> to make significant headway, was extremely critical of previous government leaders and highlighted extreme forms of sectarian violence nationwide: attacks on minority Hindus, Ahmadis, Sufi practitioners, Bauls, singers, theater activists, and anyone cherishing Bengali culture, as well as members of the secular civil society\u2014including university teachers, veteran freedom fighters, and supporters of Sheikh Hasina\u2019s party, the Awami League. Even as this article is being written, people in the Hill Tracts remain under attack.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sheikh Hasina responded pragmatically \u2014 through law, political strategy, and social reform. She sought broad support, even integrating Islamist students into universities. <\/span>Yet fundamentalists’ politics tried to drag the country backward. They pursued a medieval vision and an economy stuck in the 1990s \u2014 just as Bangladesh began to climb.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to World Bank projections, Bangladesh\u2019s economy is at an all-time low now in 36 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the interim government,<\/span><\/strong> created severe moral and security crises across the country. <\/span>Violence carried out by<\/strong> extremist-aligned July protesters (Jamat-Shibir, alliance of Islamic-state groups and BNP) includs extortions, killings, extrajudicial deaths in prison, assassinations of targeted political party members, hindus and supporters, rape accompanied by killing\u00a0 and other attacks\u2014has often been falsely attributed to Sheikh Hasina\u2019s party members. Who are now banned and face the threat of mass arrest or execution.<\/span><\/h3>\n

***<\/span><\/p>\n

Sheikh Hasina stands as<\/strong> a testament to endurance and vision. Her life story is inseparable from the nation. She rose above loss, turmoil, and ideology to guide Bangladesh to stability and dignity. Her legacy is courage, intellect, and commitment to freedom, progress, mutual respect, and sovereignty.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her foreign policy anchored<\/strong> Bangladesh as a distinct South Asia. She built connectivity with India, balanced ties with China and the West, and championed refugee protection and climate resilience. Dhaka became a bridge, not a pawn, but a pivot \u2014 mediator, trade hub, moral voice.<\/span><\/h3>\n

Yet Yunus, the self-<\/strong>styled \u201cglobal player,\u201d leans on Hasina\u2019s fifteen-year foundations. Unskilled, morally adrift, he allows extremists to shape policy and occypy the administration. He builds on her achievements: the Padma Bridge, highways, metro, and ports.<\/span><\/h3>\n

***<\/span><\/p>\n

In this light, <\/b>Prime Minister <\/b>Sheikh Hasina is more than a national leader; she is the cornerstone of a possible new South Asia \u2014 one defined less by rivalry and more by interdependence. Her example shows that democracy is not merely a system of governance but a shield against extremism, a philosophy where negotiations and diplomacy replace war, and a canvas on which small nations can sketch a pragmatic path to development. Above all, her leadership is an art of stewardship, allowing a nation to reconcile faith, freedom, and civic responsibility. <\/span><\/p>\n

The West should give<\/strong> her the credit she deserves. He rgovernment had limitations. But<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>her leadership has delivered precisely what Western policymakers claim to value: stability in a volatile region, steady economic growth in one of the world\u2019s most crowded countries, a bulwark against extremism, and a rare example of a Muslim-majority democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bangladesh has not collapsed <\/b>into sectarian violence it faced in last two decades, yet it has been wounded time and again by Islamic-state actors. And through July conspiracy, these actors eventually sought to crown Muhammad Yunus as their standard-bearer toward a dreamt Caliphate.\u00a0 <\/span>They share the ideology that once sought to erase nations’ dream to free Bangladesh in 1971.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 1971 these forces<\/b> have schemed to undermine\u00a0 bangladesh’s liberation, it’s leaders who believe in the founding principles,\u00a0 and the nation’s hard-won independence \u2014 a betrayal still felt in the hearts of its people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Few nations must endure<\/strong> this misfortune \u2014 to harbour such actors who provide services to the intent of an Empire on reversing progress and dragging the country back into non-development. Jamaat, its student wing Shibir, and Hizb-ut-Tahrir, the Extremists who want fight Jihad against Non-Muslims, the very actors behind the July quota protests, know well that their vision for Bangladesh will be to make it a part of the Islamic Empire and turn the Non Muslim world into believers of Islam.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since July 2024, Muhammad<\/strong> Yunus has faced criticism over alleged dishonesty and controversies surrounding his Yunus Centre. Several claims about his work have been publicly disputed.\u00a0<\/span>He had many achievements to focus on, yet he attempted to enter politics without understanding it, leading the country into turmoil. His prior work should have secured his reputation and well-being.\u00a0 Instead, he pursued political involvement. All the new projects he initiated since July 2024, were funded with the money of ordinary Bangladeshis. Meanwhile, the World Bank reports that 36% of the population is falling into poverty again. <\/span><\/p>\n

Sheikh Hasina\u2019s long tenure<\/strong> continued to shape Bangladesh\u2019s political stability and economic growth. Major infrastructure projects, with the potential to strengthen regional connectivity across South Asia, and social programs are closely linked to her government. Meanwhile, opposition parties (BNP and Jamat) pursued their personal and economic interests while frequently boycotting elections, undermining government effectiveness, hurting national progreess and attracting international scrutiny. Their actions have left Bangladesh’s democratic environment fragmented and fragile. In July 2024, they shattered the governing system to push for Islamic rule, plunging the nation into internal turmoil and extrenal risks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Many see Sheikh Hasina<\/strong> as the heartbit of Bangladesh’s governance, steadying the course through storm. Yet critics caution that leaning too heavily on one hand to steer the ship risks fraying the very fabric of democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n

Observers also point to<\/strong> ongoing challenges in the interim government, including allegations of mismanagement and misuse of foreign currency earnings. With no strong alternative leadership and limited public support for Jamaat-e-Islami, Hasina is seen by many as the only viable option. Experts suggest that cultivating new leadership will be crucial for the country\u2019s resilience.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sheikh Hasina\u2019s achievements often<\/strong> went overlooked. Her strategic balancing \u2014 India and China, Islam and secularism, growth and equity \u2014 is still ignored. Recognizing her is not flattery. The West\u2019s vision of a stable, plural, prosperous South Asia cannot exist without a democratic process in Bangladesh. <\/span><\/p>\n

Bangladesh remains a hardworking<\/strong> nation, its people brimming with dreams and untapped potential. Political analysts say that effective leadership, guided by strong institutions, human development, and a delicate balance with neighboring and regional nations, will be crucial for the country\u2019s stability, growth, and the protection of its sovereignty. This vision, shimmering on the horizon of possibility, is one that Sheikh Hasina still holds dearly, like a lantern lighting the path forward. <\/span><\/p>\n
