How Kolkata’s famous Mohan’s Bookshop lost its battle against the Covid-19 pandemic

    Nature’s first green is gold,
    Her hardest hue to hold.
    Her early leaf’s a flower;
    But only so an hour.
    Then leaf subsides to leaf.
    So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
    Nothing gold can stay.
    — Robert Frost

Mohan Tiwari knows in his heart what Robert Frost meant when he wrote these lines. Nature does not allow a state of perennial existence. Same is the case with life. The iconic Mohan’s Bookshop and Magazine in Kolkata has closed its doors for the last time in March 2021.

The Tiwari family is grieving. It has already been more than a month since the family ceased to be the owner of a bookshop.

    In His Majesty’s name

Mohan Tiwari was born in a time when India was still under British rule. The Britishers were yet to leave us. He was the first of three sons of a farming family in the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. The paucity of resources at home had kept young Mohan from getting any education.

“He came to Kolkata in 1943 looking for work,” said Gopal Tiwari, Mohan Tiwari’s eldest son. “He could not have been more than 14 years when he came here.” As he had no education and or any particular trade, young Mohan sought to hawk newspapers at traffic signals in Chowringhee, which housed the majority of the British population in Calcutta.

Mohan Tiwari got used to toiling hard from an early age. He spent the days hawking newspapers and slept off the nights on the sidewalks. This went on till the ’60s.

After hawking newspapers for more than a decade, Mohan Tiwari managed to set up a stall near the Grand Hotel with the help of a wall almirah. This was the beginning of his love affair with books, which went on for more than half a century. He started selling English books, alongside British and American magazines. The bookstall was later followed by a full-fledged bookshop.

“He did not have anyone to show him the ropes of the publishing trade,” said Gopal Tiwari. “He learnt it all on his own He drowned himself in books and thought of nothing else. He even took some classes to learn English.”
    Mahanagar days

There was a brief lull in business after 1947. The Britishers left for their country, but the intelligentsia in Calcutta soon greeted Mohan’s with open arms. “So many eminent people of the city used to come to our shop,” said Gopal Tiwari, who joined his father at work in 1992. “From bureaucrats to academics, our shop catered to them all.”

Auteur Satyajit Ray frequented the shop from his college days. “My father had a rapport with him from the time he was yet to become a world-famous director,” Gopal Tiwari said. “I have seen other celebrities like Soumitra Chatterjee and Aparna Sen coming to our shop.”

The cultural landscape in Kolkata during the prime of Mohan’s was nothing short of exuberantly active. The shop became something of a shrine for literary enthusiasts. College students and university students from all over the city went to the shop, which became an indelible part of the city’s cultural landscape.

    Saying goodbye

“We were all heartbroken to leave the book trade but we have to survive,” Gopal Tiwari said when I asked him how his father has been feeling about the change. “I think he feels ten times worse than me.”

But why did the family have to close the shop? For a number of reasons. The bookshop was part of an intricate cultural eco-system that has changed rapidly and radically in the last decade. The bookshop thrived because of a conducive and encouraging environment. “Lighthouse cinema was just opposite to our shop,” said Gopal Tiwari. “Many people who used to frequent the theatre made sure to pay us a visit, either before or after the movie.” The single screen Lighthouse cinema was replaced by a big garment retailer in the early 2000s.

“I don’t think too many people read books anymore,” said Gopal Tiwari. In addition, giant e-commerce platforms have been driving out small enterprises. When I asked Mohan Tiwari about these online platforms, he said, “These big companies are luring away customers with big discounts. We cannot hope to match up to them. There were around 18 bookshops in the Esplanade area earlier. Now only Modern Books is left. I imagine they are also struggling to stay afloat.”

“My father came to the shop regularly till before the pandemic,” said Gopal Tiwari. “He loved the shop so much, but I knew we would have to sell the business eventually.” Mohan Tiwari’s younger son Ranjit Tiwari is a film director in Mumbai. Gopal Tiwari’s son Harshwardhan Tiwari is an engineering student hoping to go abroad for higher education. The fate of the bookshop had been hanging in the balance for quite some time.

The last nail in the coffin was the Covid-19 pandemic. “We had to shut the shop for the lockdown,” said Gopal Tiwari. “When we opened after that hardly anyone came. I tried my best. Dad understands this.” He explained to me that they used generate a chunk of their revenue from delivering books to companies for their training programmes. This stream dried up after the pandemic.

Finally, on March 17, 2021 Mohan’s Bookshop opened for one last time. “I could not bring myself to tell our few regular customers that we are closing permanently,” said Mohan Tiwari. “Most of them found out from the news. They were all heartbroken. Some of them still make me get books for them.”

Mohan Tiwari was born in a remote village named Prabodhpur in Uttar Pradesh. His family were farmers until they lost their land to the Ganges. His bookshop owed its genesis to a calamity. And then another calamity brought about its closure. As I write this, Mohan Tiwari is fighting for his life in a hospital. We can only hope.

Mamata Banerjee, India’s tallest political leader
    https://thefinancialexpress.com.bd/views/opinions/mamata-banerjee-indias-tallest-political-leader-1620054630

To paraphrase Charles de Gaulle, Mamata Banerjee has lost a battle, in Nandigram, but she has won the war in West Bengal. Having beaten the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) so decisively at the state elections, despite all the big guns from the centre in New Delhi descending on the state and making it clear that their goal was to show the feisty Chief Minister the door, Ms Banerjee can now properly claim to be a giant slayer. In simple terms, her electoral triumph has transformed her into the tallest political leader in India today through exposing her rivals for the hollowness, as it now turns out, that was symbolic of their politics.

It does not help the BJP that a good number of its stalwarts are now trying to put a spin on the results of the election. Men like Chandra Kumar Bose, who until the other day waxed eloquent about the grave need to defeat the Trinamool Congress (TMC), have in the aftermath of the elections called for the creation of an inclusive society in West Bengal. They have cleverly papered over the truth that during the election campaign, inclusive politics was indeed the plank on which Mamata Banerjee and her party fought the battle for the ballot.

In contrast, the BJP played the divisive Hindutva card (the slogan ‘Jai Shri Ram’ being notable), all too often ridiculing Banerjee for what it called her appeasement of the religious minority, in this instance the state’s Muslim population. That approach has now backfired, given that Muslims have made their choice known by voting en masse for the TMC. Add to that the women’s votes which have fallen into Banerjee’s bag. And, of course, liberal Hindus, outraged by the brazen communal card played by the BJP, have rallied behind her.

In more ways than one, Mamata Banerjee fought a powerful group of Delhi-based politicians all by herself. She was the voice of the TMC, waging a rear-guard battle against a Prime Minister, a Home Minister, the BJP chief and an entire phalanx of Modi loyalists. Add to that the individuals who, having been loyal to Banerjee for years, swiftly decided to jump ship and make their way to the BJP. The actor Mithun Chakravarty called himself a cobra, in other words informing anyone who would listen that he had the sting to kill the TMC dragon.

That has not happened. Of course, the BJP has won a substantial number of seats, in the seventies’ figures, in the state assembly. But that number pales before the pre-election boast of the party’s leading figures that they expected to romp home with two hundred seats or perhaps more. Those two hundred-plus seats have gone to the TMC, testimony to the skills and enduring appeal of a politician who turfed the Left out of power in 2011 and then won a second term in 2016.

Now that the TMC has won a third term in office in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee’s reputation as a giant killer has simply been cemented in a way few people thought would happen (she was called a giant killer years ago when she beat the CPI(M)’s Somnath Chatterjee at an election). ‘Khela hobe’ was Banerjee’s message, accompanied as it was by ‘Joi Bangla’, during the campaign this time around. The ‘khela’ is over, with the TMC walking out of the field a cheerful winner. As for the BJP, it made the serious mistake of fielding Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, J.P. Nadda and a whole army of others against the solitary Mamata Banerjee. Amit Shah’s road trips in the state every day and Modi’s rallies every other day did not help.

For the public and the media, Modi’s self-congratulations on the huge public rallies he addressed in the state were seen as self-aggrandisement. Neither did it help that the Prime Minister, in less than prime ministerial demeanour, resorted to using such sarcastic phrases as ‘Didi O Didi’ at his rallies. For the voters in West Bengal, as has now been proved, such sarcasm and ridicule did not go down well. In plain terms, it was a blunder for the BJP to have the Prime Minister and the Home Minister engage in an unseemly battle to dislodge a Chief Minister from power. There is hardly any earlier record in Indian history of a leadership at the central level wading into elections at the state level.

It is once again Mamata Banerjee’s moment in the sun, as it was her moments in sunlit glory in 2011 and 2016. A study of her career is revealing of the difficult, indeed improbable terrain she has traversed since she made her entry into politics in the mid-1970s. Her determination and strength earned her praise from the redoubtable Jyoti Basu, for they have been character traits that have stood her in good stead over the years. It took huge courage for her to delink herself from the Congress (she served as a minister of state under Prime Minister Narasimha Rao in the early 1990s) and form the TMC.

And then there have been the times when she has served as a minister in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in Delhi, under Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, in the late 1990s to early 2000s. In these past many years, she has faced challenges from the Left, from the Congress and now from the BJP. She has beaten back those challenges, for one good reason: her politics has always been that of a street fighter. She stood by the villagers of Singur, demanding that Tata’s nano car project not be allowed to seize their land. Her politics worked. Today, the Left stands decimated; the Congress is comatose; and the BJP licks its wounds.

Banerjee has never felt the need to be subtle in her expression of ideas. Coming from a humble middle class background, she has been one of the very few politicians in West Bengal who have made it a point to mingle, literally, with the masses. Dressed in a simple cotton saree, abjuring all thoughts of the glamour that afflicts so many political figures in these times, she has walked through the villages and towns of West Bengal, presenting herself as ‘Bangla’r meye’.

In the just concluded election campaign, she did what the BJP failed to do. She reached out to all Bengalis, Hindu and Muslim, informing them that the heritage of Bengal — underscored by secularism, by a collective adherence to its poetry and its multifarious religious manifestations — was under assault from the votaries of Hindu nationalism and needed to be saved. On the TMC’s political posters, she was therefore alternately presented in the image of a woman praying to a Muslim deity and as a devout Hindu in obeisance to the goddess Kali.

In the course of the campaign, Mamata Banerjee vowed to have the BJP bite the dust in West Bengal and then have it go out of power in Delhi. She has retained West Bengal. Whether she now sets her sights on Delhi 2024 — and that depends on the degree to which she can be a galvanizing force for the opposition — is a thought that will exercise minds in India and beyond. Banerjee has shown that there is space for a credible alternative to the politics Narendra Modi has promoted and presided over in Delhi over the past seven years.

Meet Sunchika Pandey, the woman behind Mumbai Police and BMC’s viral tweets
    https://www.vogue.in/culture-and-living/content/meet-sunchika-pandey-the-woman-behind-mumbai-police-and-bmc-twitter-accounts

Sunchika Pandey’s daily screen time far exceeds that of the average millennial. The 38-year-old confesses that the only time she’s not looking at her phone screen is when she’s sleeping. When I nudge her to check her iPhone for stats, she sounds almost relieved: “It’s 17 hours a day this week, so it’s improved.”

But Pandey is not your average millennial who uses social media to document every minutiae of her life, neither is she driven to it by the all-encompassing quarantine boredom. Endearingly called ‘Twitter madame’, she is credited with giving Mumbai Police, as well as other institutions like BMC, a digital facelift by taking on their social media duties. “It’s not just digital but even communication via their videos or radio. Our job is basically communication through content,” explains Pandey, who runs HAT Media with a team of three content writers and two designers.

As Mumbai Police’s official tweeter-in-chief, Pandey has converted their image from stick-wielding disciplinarians into people’s cops. Even their most ardent fans might not know her, but she plays the arbiter of truth, whose tweets connect people to the police. Short, informative and most often, relatable, through her hands, official institutions that are often viewed as strict and authoritative suddenly seem more amicable and accessible. And in 280 characters or less, she carves for them a personality that is all about saving the world but also having a good time. “Around the end of 2015, when Mumbai Police launched its Twitter handle, there was a clear understanding that this was going to become an online control room where people would come with certain expectations. It was created to be an additional platform for the cops to come closer to people,” says Pandey, who also manages social media for Mumbai’s BMC and the Pune city police.

    Laugh but listen

Social media today is nothing short of a popularity contest and for Mumbai Police that acclaim comes by how creatively they harness the dual power of the platform to inform and entertain. On Twitter, their five million followers are accustomed to seeing PSAs masked in humour which oscillates from the smart alec-brand of Amul ads of the ’90s to the cheesy but chuckle-worthy type you’d witness on a church banner. It helps, especially during a pandemic, to keep a cooped-up, screen-dazed audience captive yet informed.

With her friends in the forces, Pandey often brainstorms new approaches to the same problems—drugs, phishing and cyber crime and domestic violence. “From the start, the idea was to do something different. It’s a big step for the police department to come on a public platform, but they didn’t just want to be present on social media for cosmetic value. They wanted to dismiss the fear of the police and show people they were friends who could make them smile.” The decision also showed their willingness to move away from the old structures and hierarchies, and shake up the usual way of doing things—with Twitter, they empowered every netizen to reach out for help with just a simple tag.

Waging war on disinformation and fake news through memes and wordplay, this digitally-savvy account has a fan following not just from Mumbai, but across India. And like any good influencer, its success lies in how it seems to have cracked how people interact socially—using lines from iconic movies and trending shows, it appeals to a zeitgeist that has an appetite for jokes replete with pop culture references and millennial speak.

These days, levity may have taken a backseat in the face of sharing information on new restrictions and guidelines, but their content still remains uplifting, and one that goes beyond the sardonic newsmongering that you cannot escape on Twitter. “When the world is in pain, it’s important to also think about the importance of bringing a smile,” says Pandey, who sees the police department as her co-genius collaborator. In most interviews, she insists that the writing is not just showing off her team’s repertoire but often features clever content made by an army of quick-witted police officers. The viral tweet ‘If you roll, we will weed you out’, to mark Anti-Drugs Awareness Week, showcased former Commissioner of Police Ahmed Javed’s love for wordplay. “We understand that if there’s good engagement on our platforms, people understand what’s happening, and the communication becomes clear,” she adds.
    The messenger

Pandey and team are well aware of social media’s civic impact. When people tweet relentlessly, the Mumbai police make sure no query goes unresolved. In this difficult time when the government is steadily rolling out new campaigns and schedules on the daily, accounts like theirs as well as @MyBMC have become a repository of official information.

Always up-to-date and feverishly posting about vaccine slots and protocols, while dispelling myths, @MyBMC’s efficient COVID management model even won applause by the Supreme Court recently. For the newly-added vaccine-receiving demographic of 18-44-year-olds, their Twitter has become the dispenser of critical information. “Different platforms serve different needs. For us, Twitter is great for real time interaction. We have trained the team to check messages regularly and reply,” adds Pandey, whose personal account @policewalipublic also shows her amplifying news and furiously responding to inquiries.

The second wave may have brought most professions to a halt or transition once again to work from home, but the police department, just like their Twitter, carry on through the day. “On their account, the conversation is never dormant, it happens 24/7,” adds Pandey. These days she is leading her team on a tight schedule. Like any social conversation, much of the banter online revolves around the pandemic—is there a lockdown? What are the restrictions? Can you buy medicines without being fined? What about groceries? “COVID-19 is not exactly a police subject but we are talking about it constantly because that’s the only threat in people’s lives right now. The moment we think of deviating from COVID-19, there is news of some new guidelines to share.”
    Call of duty

A former journalist, Pandey knows the news job too well and uses the same approach to dispense data and information meticulously for the benefit of people. Pandey’s past experience as first a broadcast journalist at NDTV and then as the social media executive for the Aamir Khan-hosted Satyamev Jayate prepared her for this. “I used to think that television was the industry where you spend the longest time at work, but when I got to digital, I realised my work was 24 hours. This is the most hectic work schedule I’ve had in my entire career,” she says.

Reporting crime in the city, she was already used to spending endless hours in the police stations. Now making videos and tweets for them—a process that can take up anywhere from two minutes to many hours—has also given her insight into the police’s psyche. Their uniform may obscure the idea that they are regular people, but they are just one of us: “Like us, they have families to go to, but to know that they put themselves at risk to do their duty to the people is something we should all realise,” says Pandey, who speaks as fast as she can probably tweet. “It makes you understand that if you want to change the system you have to become a part of it.”

As the pandemic’s ravages increase (only last week, India recorded 4,00,000 daily cases), their work as essential work comes with its own challenges. Last month, Pandey truly understood their role, when a tragedy hit close to home. “I was sitting and assigning hospital beds for those in need when I found out I’d lost my father-in-law to COVID,” she tells me. “After hearing this, I had to first think of how to manage my family while also figuring how I can help others battling for life. It made me closer to understanding what happens to the cops and all the public service people at a time like this. ”

Like most digital entrepreneurs, her work may keep her glued to the screen, but she hasn’t ever considered a digital detox: “My detox is when people compliment the policemen, I take it personally,” she says. This also pushes her to move on: “My job offers scope for so many people to ask questions directly on the same platform to the police department. So I’d say our mission is the same—to make things better.”

    https://bangla.bdnews24.com/samagrabangladesh/article1893390.bdnews

Germany says committed genocide in Namibia during colonial rule
    https://www.24matins.uk/topnews/int/germany-says-committed-genocide-in-namibia-during-colonial-rule-285573

Germany for the first time on Friday recognised it had committed genocide in Namibia during its colonial occupation, with Berlin promising financial support worth more than one billion euros to aid projects in the African nation.

German colonial settlers killed tens of thousands of indigenous Herero and Nama people in 1904-1908 massacres — labelled the first genocide of the 20th century by historians — poisoning relations between Namibia and Germany for years.

While Berlin had previously acknowledged that atrocities occurred at the hands of its colonial authorities, they have repeatedly refused to pay direct reparations.

“We will now officially refer to these events as what they are from today’s perspective: genocide,” said Foreign Minister Heiko Maas in a statement.

He hailed the agreement after more than five years of negotiations with Namibia over events in the territory held by Berlin from 1884 to 1915.

“In light of the historical and moral responsibility of Germany, we will ask forgiveness from Namibia and the victims’ descendants” for the “atrocities” committed, Maas said.

In a “gesture to recognise the immense suffering inflicted on the victims”, the country will support the “reconstruction and the development” of Namibia via a financial programme of 1.1 billion euros ($1.34 billion), he said.

The sum will be paid over 30 years, according to sources close to the negotiations, and must primarily benefit the descendants of the Herero and Nama.

However, he specified that the payment does not open the way to any “legal request for compensation”.
    Rebellion, reprisals

Namibia was called German South West Africa during Berlin’s 1884-1915 rule, and then fell under South African rule for 75 years, before finally gaining independence in 1990.

Tensions boiled over in 1904 when the Herero — deprived of their livestock and land — rose up, followed shortly after by the Nama, in an insurrection crushed by German imperial troops.

In the Battle of Waterberg in August 1904 around 80,000 Herero, including women and children, fled and were pursued by German troops across what is now known as the Kalahari Desert. Only 15,000 survived.

German General Lothar von Trotha, sent to put down the rebellion, ordered the peoples’ extermination.

At least 60,000 Hereros and around 10,000 Namas were killed between 1904 and 1908.

Colonial soldiers carried out mass executions; exiled men, women, and children to the desert where thousands died of thirst; and established infamous concentration camps, such as the one on Shark Island.
    ‘Overcome the past’

The atrocities committed during colonisation have poisoned relations between Berlin and Windhoek for years.

In 2015, the two countries started negotiating an agreement that would combine an official apology by Germany as well as development aid.

But in August last year, Namibia said that Germany’s offered reparations were unacceptable. No details of the offer were provided at the time.

President Hage Geingob had noted Berlin declined to accept the term “reparations”, as that word was also avoided during the country’s negotiations with Israel after the Holocaust.

But in an effort to ease reconciliation, in 2018 Germany returned the bones of members of the Herero and Nama tribes, with the then foreign minister Michelle Muentefering asking for “forgiveness from the bottom of my heart”.
