    Japan’s historical illusion disdains int’l justice: editorial

    The People’s Daily, the flagship newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party, on Tuesday ran an editorial entitled “The essence of creating historical illusion is to disdain international justice” as follows:

    Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been bombarded by the international community for his wrong words and actions, but he is still incorrigibly obstinate, talking absurdities and repeating his mistakes.

    Recently, Abe used various occasions to defend his visit to the Yasukuni Shrine that honors 14 Class-A war criminals. He tried his best to stealthily substitute concepts with sheer fabrication and strained interpretation. Most ridiculously, while being interviewed in Davos, Switzerland, Abe compared China-Japan relations to the British-German ties on the eve of World War I. The intrigue of making historical illusions is intended to distract the international community’s attentions and confuse right and wrong.

    His favorites are also bustling about. Some have denied the Nanjing Massacre, expressing doubt about the just trial of Japanese militarism by the international community. There are those who have beat the drum for the theory that Japan’s peaceful constitution is invalid, trying to break the international order safeguarding peace after victory in the world’s anti-fascist war. Others have been busy revising standards for the approval of textbooks, asking publishing houses to describe the history of invasion with ambiguous terms, and claiming the Diaoyu Islands, which have belonged to China since ancient times, as an “integral part of Japan.” Still others have tried to deny the facts about “comfort women,” a war crime with iron-clad evidence.

    One should not be ambiguous on major issues of principle. The Japanese right-wing politicians’ bungling acts are like performances by clowns occasionally happening on the great stage of history.

    However, people have to take a more vigilant attitude toward them, as they are trying to falsify history, challenging human conscience and confronting justice. It is very dangerous.

    Abe is wrong, but he sought foundation from pre-WWI history like a hungry man is not choosy about his food. His so-called foundation is purely groundless and unrelated, which has exposed his ulterior motive.

    People with basic knowledge of history know that the British-German relations before WWI were of competition between two imperialist countries for overseas colonies. China, however, is a country which had suffered from plundering, bullying and partition by great powers, and a country focuses on maintaining peace and seeking development after winning independence.

    China has promised that it will never seek hegemony, and has been widely recognized as a country that advocates peace, development, cooperation and win-win situations.

    No matter how it is viewed, China has no similarities with any imperialist countries. Comparing China to Germany before WWI was aimed at covering Japanese right-wing politicians’ wrong acts of deviating from the peaceful path. Japan’s attempt to achieve historical misconceptions was in defiance of international justice.

    Abe’s outright distortion of truth and blatant smearing of China using his gangster logic is proof of Japan’s refusal to recognize its depraved history of imperialist aggression, expansion and colonial domination, bringing it to the spotlight once again under the scrutiny of the international community.

    — In 1894, Japan waged the First Sino-Japanese War;

    — In 1910, Japan forcefully annexed the Korean Peninsula;

    — In 1931, Japan invaded and occupied northeast China;

    — In 1937, Japan launched an all-out war against China;

    — In 1941, Japan started the Pacific War;

    In the face of a blood-stained list of crimes of aggression — the diabolical biochemical experiments conducted by Unit 731 of the Japanese Imperial Forces, the coercive recruitment of “Comfort Women,” and the appalling massacres conducted by the Japanese forces, among others — the Japanese government nevertheless chose to turn a blind eye to history, worship war criminals and resort to sophistry to hide its past. Such acts will only serve to alienate Japan from international justice.

    Indeed, a fallacy can never become truth. Abe’s visit to the Yasukuni Shrine also harms U.S. people’s feelings. Many in the United States have pointed out that the so-called logic of the Yasukuni Shrine — that an industrialized Japan liberalized under-developed Asia and that the Asian people should be grateful for it — is a flagrant rejection of the post-War international order and the Japanese domestic legal basis. In the wake of recent attempts to amend Japan’s post-war Constitution, former British ambassador to Japan Hugh Cortazzi warned that “those who play with fire are likely to get burned.” The current British ambassador to Japan, Tim Hitchens, also recently urged Tokyo to admit its historical mistakes.

    Japan’s refusal to admit its mistakes, show regret or introspection is intolerable for the international society, and certainly does nothing to win trust and respect. It is little wonder that people compare a Japan with rampant right-wing elements to an unrepentant, fully armed criminal returning to the community. The neighborhood is left with no choice but to grasp their bats in self defense and prepare for the worst.

    Only by recognizing history as it is can one overcome historical issues. After World War II, German Chancellor Willy Brandt’s dropping to his knees before a monument in Poland unfastened, to a large extent, the spiritual shackles cast on German nationality by historical atrocities. When commemorating the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Leningrad in January this year, German President Joachim Gauck wrote in a letter to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, “I can only think with deep sorrow and shame about the war of extermination launched by Nazi Germany against the Soviet Union.” Those are the normal attitudes toward history kept by a normal country. Germany has become a leading country in Europe nowadays exactly because of its sincere apologies and introspection.

    How to look at invasion? How to look at the pains and wounds caused by Japanese militarism on Asian people? How to look at post-WW2 international order? How to respect other countries’ territorial sovereignties? These are the questions which Japan must meditate on deeply and figure out the correct answers to. This is also the key to solving the current issues in Sino-Japanese relations. Indeed, if Japan refuses to walk out of the voodoo circle it has drawn for itself and stubbornly sticks to defying international justice by conjuring historical illusions, we will keep it company to the end. However, if it has to be this way, it will be an end that causes tremendous miseries for the entire Japanese nation.

    অরুণ সোমের ঢাকাইয়া হাসির নীচে লুকিয়ে থাকে অজস্র ‘প্রগতি’তথ্য।

    প্রগতির পথরেখা
    অরুণ সোম

    ১৯৩১ সালে সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়নের রাষ্ট্রীয় বিদেশি সাহিত্যের প্রকাশন সমিতির উদ্যোগে বিদেশের বিভিন্ন ভাষায় সোভিয়েত সাহিত্যের এবং রুশ ভাষায় বিদেশি সাহিত্যের অনুবাদ — মূলত মানববিদ্যা সংক্রান্ত এবং সর্বোপরি ভাবাদর্শগত গ্রন্থাদি প্রচারের উদ্দেশ্যে মস্কোয় ‘বিদেশী শ্রমজীবীদের প্রকাশন সমিতি’ নামে একটি সংস্থা প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়েছিল।

    ১৯৩৯ সালে সংস্থাটি নাম বদল করে ‘বিদেশী ভাষায় সাহিত্য প্রকাশালয়’ এবং ১৯৬৩ সাল থেকে ‘প্রগতি প্রকাশন’ নামে আত্মপ্রকাশ করে। মার্কসবাদী-লেলিনবাদী সাহিত্য এবং আর্থ সামাজিক ও রাজনৈতিক গ্রন্থাদির অনুবাদ ছাড়াও সোভিয়েত তথা রুশ সাহিত্য ও সংস্কৃতির প্রচারও ‘বিদেশী ভাষায় সাহিত্য প্রকাশালয়’ এবং ‘প্রগতি’র অন্যতম উদ্দশ্য ছিল। তাই সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়নে প্রকাশিত অনুবাদের অন্তত এক-চতুর্থাংশ হত সোভিয়েত ও রুশ সাহিত্যের; আবার তার সিংহভাগ ছিল শিশু ও কিশোর সাহিত্যের, যেহেতু শিশু ও কিশোর মনে নির্দিষ্ট কোন ভাবাদর্শ গাঁথা হয়ে গেলে তার প্রত্যক্ষ ও পরোক্ষ প্রভাব সুদূরপ্রসারী হওয়া খুবই সম্ভব। প্রকাশের তৃতীয় স্থানে থাকত রুশ ও সোভিয়েত ধ্রুপদী সাহিত্যের অনুবাদ।

    কিন্তু প্রচারের দিকটার কথা ছেড়ে দিলেও একথা অনস্বীকার্য যে রুশ সাহিত্য যে-কোন অবস্থাতেই হোক না কেন — সোভিয়েত-পূর্ববর্তী আমলেই হোক বা সোভিয়েত আমলেই হোক – মূলত ছিল মানবতাবাদী। তাই তার আবেদন ছিল সর্বব্যাপী। রুশ সাহিত্য বিশ্বের অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ সাহিত্য রূপে স্বীকৃত। আর পৃথিবীর অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ শিশু ও কিশোর সাহিত্যের বিকাশ যে সোভিয়েত আমলেই হয়েছিল একথাও অস্বীকার করার উপায় নেই — অবশ্য সোভিয়েত পূর্ববর্তী আমলেও সাহত্যের এই শাখাটিও যথেষ্ট উন্নত ছিল — এমন কি পুশ্‌কিন দস্তইয়েভ্‌স্কি তল্‌স্তোয় তুর্গেনভ্‌ থেকে শুরু করে এমন কোন রুশ লেখক ছিলেন না যিনি শিশু ও কিশোরদের জন্য কিছু-না-কিছু লেখেননি।

    বিগত শতাব্দীর পঞ্চাশের দশকে — তখনও অনুবাদ সাহিত্যের এই প্রকাশালয়টি ‘বিদেশী ভাষায় সাহিত্য প্রকাশালয়’ নামে পরিচিত — সেই সময় সেখানে স্থায়ী বাংলা বিভাগ গড়ে উঠেছিল। সেই পর্বে অনুবাদক হিসেবে আমাদের দেশ থেকে সেখানে যোগ দিতে গিয়েছিলেন : ননী ভৌমিক, নীরেন্দ্রনাথ রায়, কামাক্ষীপ্রসাদ চট্টোপাধ্যায়, ফল্গু কর, সমর সেন ও শুভময় ঘোষ (শুভময় ঘোষের স্ত্রী সুপ্রিয়া ঘোষও কিছু অনুবাদ করেছিলেন)। সম্ভবত সেটা ১৯৫৭ সাল। এক কালের বিখ্যাত চলচ্চিত্র-অভিনেতা রাধামোহোন ভট্টাচার্যও অল্প সময়ের জন্য সেখানে অনুবাদকের কাজ করেন। এরই কাছাকাছি কোন এক সময়ে কোলকাতা থেকে বিষ্ণু মুখোপাধ্যায়ও যোগ দেন। কোলকাতায় তিনি ‘স্বাধীনতা’ পত্রিকার সাংবাদিক ছিলেন। ননী ভৌমিক ও বিষ্ণু মুখোপাধ্যায় ছাড়া এই পর্বের অনুবাদকদের কারোই মস্কোয় অনুবাদকের কর্মজীবন তিন-চার বছরের বেশি স্থায়ী হয়নি। দীর্ঘ দুই দশকব্যাপী অনুবাদকের কর্মজীবনের অন্তে অবসর নিয়ে আশির দশকে বিষ্ণু মুখোপাধ্যায় দেশে ফিরে আসেন। একমাত্র ননী ভৌমিকই পাকাপাকি ভাবে মস্কোয় থেকে যান।

    প্রথম পর্বের অনুবাদকদের মধ্যে একমাত্র নীরেন্দ্রনাথ রায় ছিলেন রুশ ভাষা বিশেষজ্ঞ সাহিত্যিক। ননী ভৌমিক পরবর্তীকালে রুশ ভাষা শিখে সরাসরি রুশ থেকেই অনুবাদ করতেন।

    সত্তরের দশক পর্যন্ত ননী ভৌমিক ও বিষ্ণু মুখোপাধ্যায় — এঁরা দুজন ছাড়া ‘প্রগতি’র বাংলা বিভাগে আর কোনও অনুবাদক ছিলেন না। ননী ভৌমিক বিবিধ বিষয়ের রচনার অনুবাদের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে রুশ গল্প উপন্যাস এবং বিশেষত শিশু ও কিশোর সাহিত্যের অনুবাদও করতেন। বিষ্ণু মুখোপাধ্যায় ছিলেন আর্থ সামাজিক ও রাজনৈতিক গ্রন্থের অনুবাদক।

    ‘প্রগতি’ ততদিনে বিশ্বের সর্ববৃহৎ প্রকাশনালয়ে পরিণত হয়। পৃথিবীর ৫৬টি ভাষায় অনুবাদ সাহিত্য প্রকাশিত হত এখান থেকে। বছরে মুদ্রণসংখ্যা ১ কোটি ছাপিয়ে গিয়েছিল। ‘প্রগতি’র প্রকাশিত বইগুলি তাদের বিষয়বৈচিত্র্য, মুদ্রণ পারিপাট্য, নজরকাড়া অলংকরণ এবং সুলভ মূল্যের জন্য তৃতীয় দুনিয়ার দেশগুলিতে, বিশেষত ভারতের মতো দেশে বিপুল জনপ্রিয়তা অর্জন করেছিল। এক সময় সর্বস্তরের পাঠকমহলে সেগুলি ব্যাপক প্রচার লাভ করে। রুশ তথা সোভিয়েত সাহিত্য ও সংস্কৃতি দেখতে দেখতে দুনিয়ার ব্যাপক পাঠক সম্প্রদায়ের প্রাণের সম্পদ ও আকর্ষণের বস্তুতে পরিণত হয়।

    সত্তরের দশকে বাংলাদেশ-এর আবির্ভাবের ফলে ‘প্রগতি’র বাংলা বিভাগের গুরুত্ব বহুমাত্রায় বৃদ্ধি পেল। বাংলা তখন আর উপমহাদেশের অন্তর্ভুক্ত পৃথক পৃথক দুটি দেশের প্রাদেশিক ভাষা মাত্র নয় — একটি দেশের প্রাদেশিক ভাষা এবং অন্য একটি দেশের রাষ্ট্রভাষা। তাই ব্যাপক সম্প্রসারণ ঘটল ‘প্রগতি’র বাংলা বিভাগের। এই পর্বে ‘প্রগতি’র বাংলাবিভাগে যোগদান করেন বাংলাদেশ থেকে হায়াৎ মামুদ, খালেদ চৌধুরি (পশ্চিমবঙ্গের চিত্রশিল্পী খালেদ চৌধুরী নন) ও দ্বিজেন শর্মা, কোলকাতা থেকে আমি এবং কবি মঙ্গলাচরণ চট্টোপাধ্যায়, কিছুকাল পরে প্রফুল্ল রায় (উপন্যাসিক প্রফুল্ল রায় নন)। এছাড়া ননী ভৌমিক ও বিষ্ণু মুখোপাধ্যায় ত ছিলেনই। স্থানীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের স্নাতক দুজন বাঙালি যুবক — বিজয় পাল এবং সুবীর মজুমদারও এই সময় ‘প্রগতি’তে অনুবাদকের কাজে যোগ দিয়েছিলেন। এই পর্বের অনুবাদকদের মধ্যে ননী ভৌমিক ছাড়া শেষোক্ত দুজন এবং আমি ও হায়াৎ মামুদই সরাসরি রুশ থেকে অনুবাদ করতাম, বাকিরা ইংরেজি থেকে। ‘প্রগতি’র বাংলা বিভাগ তখন ভারতীয় ভাষাবিভাগগুলির মধ্যে সর্ববৃহৎ হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছিল।

    মস্কোয় নিযুক্ত নিয়মিত অনুবাদকদের বাইরেও ‘প্রগতি’ ও ‘রাদুগা’ প্রকাশালয়ের জন্য বিভিন্ন সময়ে পুষ্পময়ী বসু (‘মা’), ইলা মিশ্র (চাপায়েভ্‌), গিরীন চক্রবর্তী (‘মানুষ কী করে বড়ো হল’, ‘তিমুর ও তার দলবল’, ‘ছত্রভঙ্গ’) সত্য গুপ্ত (‘পৃথিবী পথে’), রথীন্দ্র সরকার (‘পৃথিবীর পাঠশালায়’), অমল দাশগুপ্ত (‘আমার ছেলেবেলা’), অরুণ দাশগুপ্ত (‘অ্যান্ড্রোমেডা নিহারীকা’), প্রদ্যোৎ গুহ, প্রফুল্ল রায়চৌধুরী, ক্ষিতীশ রায় (‘পুনরুজ্জীবন’) এবং অনিমেষকান্তি পালও অনুবাদ করেছেন। আবার প্রথম দিককার অনেক অনুবাদকের নাম অপ্রকাশিতই রয়ে গেছে। তাঁদের নাম এখন আর জানার উপায় নেই।

    আশির দশকে ‘প্রগতি’র অগ্রগতি এতদূর হয়েছিল যে বিশেষভাবে গল্প উপন্যাস এবং শিশু ও কিশোর সাহিত্য অনুবাদের জন্য ১৯৮২ সালে ‘রাদুগা’ নামে পৃথক আরও একটি প্রকাশন সংস্থা গঠিত হয়। সেখানে আমিই ছিলাম বাংলা বিভাগের একমাত্র স্থায়ী অনুবাদক। ননী ভৌমিক ‘প্রগতি’তেই থেকে গেলেন, যদিও ‘প্রগতি’তে থেকেও ‘রাদুগা’র বেশ কিছু উল্লেখযোগ্য বইও তিনি অনুবাদ করেছেন। এছাড়া দ্বিজেন শর্মা এবং তাঁর স্ত্রী দেবী শর্মাও ‘রাদুগা’র দু-একটি ছোটখাটো বই অনুবাদ করেছেন। বছর দুয়েকের মধ্যে — ১৯৮৪ সালে তাশখন্দে ‘রাদুগা’র একটি বাংলা বিভাগও খোলা হয়। মস্কো বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে স্নাতকোত্তর পাঠরতা, এককালে আমার রুশ ভাষার ছাত্রী পূর্ণিমা মিত্র সেখানকার বাংলা বিভাগে অনুবাদকের কাজে যোগ দেন।

    ইতিমধ্যে মস্কোয় ‘প্রগতি’র নতুন ভবন নির্মিত হয়েছে, ‘রাদুগা’ও পৃথক একটি ভবনে উঠে যাবার উপক্রম করছে। মস্কোয় অনুবাদচর্চার যখন রমরমা চলছে ঠিক তখনই ঘটে গেল সেই আকস্মিক অঘটন। আকস্মিক বলা ঠিক হবে না — ১৯৮৫ সালে দেশে ‘পেরেস্ত্রৈকা’ ঘোষিত হওয়ার ফলে এটাই প্রত্যাশিত ছিল। চূড়ান্ত বিপর্যয়ের জন্য আরও ছয় বছর প্রতীক্ষা করতে হল। ‘প্রগতি’র দীর্ঘ ছয় দশকের ইমারত তাসের ঘরের মতো ধসে পড়ল। ১৯৯১ সালে দেশের অর্থনৈতিক ব্যবস্থার যে আমূল সংস্কার ঘোষিত হল তার ফলে রাষ্ট্রের তরফ থেকে সোভিয়েত ভাবাদর্শ এবং রুশ সাহিত্য ও সংস্কৃতি প্রচারের প্রয়োজনীয়তা ফুরিয়ে গেল। দ্বিতীয়ত, বাজার অর্থনীতির স্বাভাবিক নিয়মে ‘প্রগতি’ বা ‘রাদুগা’র মতো প্রকাশালয় একেবারেই লাভজনক প্রতিষ্ঠান ছিল না — যে রাষ্ট্রীয় অনুদান ও সরকারি ভরতুকিতে এই প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলি চলত নতুন অর্থনৈতিক ব্যবস্থা প্রচলনের ফলে একসময় তা বন্ধ হয়ে গেল। চাহিদা ও জোগানের নিয়ম অনুযায়ী চলতে গেলে বইয়ের যা মূল্য দাঁড়ায় যাদের মুখ চেয়ে তা ছাপানো তাদের পকেটে কুলোবে না। যে-কোন ভাবেই হোক, পরিবর্তিত পরিস্থিতিতে রাষ্ট্রীয় অনুদান বা সরকারি ভরতুকি দিয়ে এ সমস্ত বই প্রকাশ করার কোনও প্রশ্নই ওঠে না।

    তাই ১৯৯১ সালের ২৫ মার্চ তারিখের এক সরকারি হুকুমনামা বলে ঘোষণা করা হল : ‘বিদেশি ভাষায় সাহিত্যের প্রকাশ লাভজনক না হওয়ার কারণে ‘প্রগতি’র পরিচালকমণ্ডলীর সিদ্ধান্ত আনুসারে আগামী এপ্রিল মাস থেকে একমাত্র সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়নের অভ্যন্তরে যে সমস্ত বইয়ের ব্যাপক চাহিদা আছে শুধু সেগুলিই প্রকাশিত হবে। বস্তুতপক্ষে, প্রকাশালয়ের বিদেশি ভাষার সবগুলি দপ্তরই বন্ধ হয়ে যাচ্ছে।’ দেশের অভ্যন্তরে আমজনতার রুচি ও চাহিদার নিয়ম মেনে ‘প্রগতি’ ও ‘রাদুগা’ থেকে দেশের অগণিত পাঠকদের জন্য বিদেশি ভাষা থেকে সস্তার রগরগে নভেল ডিটেকটিভ ইত্যাদি রুশ অনুবাদে প্রকাশিত হতে লাগল। সেই বছরই ডিসেম্বরে সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়ন ভেঙে যাবার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে প্রকাশালয়ের দালান কোঠা এবং অন্যান্য স্থাবর অস্থাবর সম্পত্তি বিভিন্ন ব্যক্তিগত মালিকানাধীনে চলে যাবার ফলে ‘প্রগতি’ ও ‘রাদুগা’ গাড়ির শো রুম, নানা ধরনের দোকানপাট আর লাভজনক বাণিজ্য প্রতিষ্ঠানের অফিসের আড়ালে ঢাকা পড়ে গেল।

    আজ দু’দশকের বেশি সময় হতে চলল ‘প্রগতি’ বা ‘রাদুগা’ অতীতের বস্তু। আমাদের দেশের বর্তমান প্রজন্ম ‘প্রগতি’ বা ‘রাদুগা’ থেকে প্রকাশিত সেই সমস্ত অনুবাদের সঙ্গে একেবারেই পরিচিত নয় — অনেকে তাদের নাম পর্যন্ত শোনেনি।

    ‘প্রগতি’ ও ‘রাদুগা’র অর্ধশতাব্দীকালের যে সৃষ্টি দুই দশকের মধ্যে অবলুপ্ত হতে চলেছিল, সম্প্রতি তার উদ্ধারসাধন করে বিজ্ঞানসম্মত উপায়ে সংরক্ষণ ও প্রচারের যে বিপুল শ্রমসাধ্য কাজে স্নেহভাজন প্রসেনজিৎ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় ও সোমনাথ দাশগুপ্ত ব্রতী হয়েছে এর জন্য তারা যেমন আমাদের প্রজন্মের তেমনি বর্তমান ও ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মের মানুষদেরও কৃতজ্ঞতাভাজন হয়ে থাকবে। সোভিয়েত ইউনিয়নের মতো সমাজ ও সাহিত্য নিয়ে এমন ব্যাপার ও দীর্ঘকালীন পরীক্ষানিরীক্ষা এবং তার এমন আকস্মিক অবসান পৃথিবীতে আর কখনও ঘটেনি; তাই সোভিয়েত সমাজব্যবস্থার মতো সোভিয়েত সাহিত্যও সমগ্র বিশ্বের কৌতূহলী গবেষকদের দীর্ঘকাল আলোচনার বিষয় হয়ে থাকবে। সেদিক থেকে এদের উদ্যোগ ভবিষ্যৎ গবেষণারও আকর হয়ে থাকবে।

    সংগ্রহ ও সংরক্ষণের কাজে বিভিন্ন মহল থেকে যে ব্যাপক সাড়া ও সহযোগিতা মিলছে তা অত্যন্ত উৎসাহব্যাঞ্জক। তাই মনে হয় এখনও সব ফুরিয়ে যায়নি। ইতিহাসের পুনরাবৃত্তি ত ঘটেই। আশা করা যেতে পারে এদের উদ্যোগের ফলে মানবতাবাদী রুশ সাহিত্যজগৎ আবারও আজকের দিশেহারা মানুষের পথের দিশারি হবে।

    শীতকালীন অলিম্পিক আর কত দিন শুধু সাদাদের থাকবে? কালোরা কোথায়, পীতেরা কোথায়? সবুজ বাদামি তামাটেরা কোনোদিন সেখানে যাবে?

    Shani Davis, no matter where he finishes, remains an unfortunate exception at Winter Games

    Don’t listen to your friends back home saying the Winter Olympics are just for white people who like the cold and vacation in Aspen. This is the most inclusive Winter Games ever. Why, there are Caucasians here from almost 88 different nations.

    Bada-bing! I’ll be here all week.

    Actually, I will be here the next 10 days. And in that time, I will encounter no more than a dozen people of African American descent. They are the same ones I see over and over.

    Speedskater Shani Davis, Lolo Jones and the U.S. women’s bobsled team, NBC correspondent Lewis Johnson and about three other black journalists, one of whom I sang backup for in a Salt-N-Pepa karaoke gig at the media dorm at 3 a.m. the other night. (I was Salt.)

    Maybe it’s because I lived in the District for eight years. Maybe it’s because I spent my formative years in a real melting pot: rural Oahu, Hawaii, where diversity in ethnicity and culture are part of island life. Maybe I’m just used to seeing and feeling comfortable being around a variety of people, many of whom don’t look like me.

    Whatever, this place is whiter than an episode of “Downton Abbey.”

    Lawrence Murray, an intern for the U.S. Olympic Committee finishing up his masters in journalism at Southern California, ran into a fellow African American colleague the other day.

    “He stopped me,” Murray said, referring to an instant level of kinship based on complexion. “He was like, ‘Hey, what’s up?’ He’s the only one I’ve seen or talked to.”

    When Murray got off the plane in Sochi, Russian police approached, which has to be every foreigner’s nightmare. Except . . .

    “They wanted to take a picture of me,” Murray said. “First, one guy would take a picture. Then his friend wanted one, then another guy. That was my welcome to Sochi. My travel partner said, ‘They probably think you look like Shani Davis.’ ”

    Judging from the ethnic breakdown here, I’m betting it was an even more basic fascination than wanting a photo with a potential famous athlete. Tatiana, look, I met a real black person today!

    Sochi is one of the most multinational cities in Russia. There are ethnic Russians, about 70 percent of the population, Armenians, Ukrainians, Georgians, Greeks, Circassians, Belorussians, Tatars and Jews — which create roughly a, oh, 100 percent Caucasian stew.

    Now, you are reading this and thinking one of two things: What’s with the white guilt, son? Or, What does race have to do with the greatest athletes in the world competing in their chosen disciplines, most of which just happen to be contested against other Caucasians?

    Look, I don’t care about the color of the competitors. And I don’t think the paucity of black or Hispanic athletes should cheapen any gold medal, as if somehow this were a cold-war Olympics that didn’t include some of the greatest sporting nations.

    The fact is, despite Vonetta Flowers becoming the first black person to become a Winter Olympic gold medalist as a bobsledder in 2002, despite Davis becoming the first male African American to win individual gold in 2006, there hasn’t been a whole lot of carryover.

    Like golf waiting forever for the Tiger Woods Factor to kick in, the USOC and other nations are still waiting for that next wave of racial diversity in the Winter Games.

    I do wonder what an athlete like Davis thinks when he shows up at the Games. It’s one thing to understand your chosen sport has international competitions in Norway and the Netherlands and that almost all of your competitors will be white. It’s another thing to show up on the world stage and see that hardly anyone in any sport looks like you.

    Aside from the large contingent of Asian athletes and a smattering of Jamaican bobsledders and Tongans, the Opening Ceremonies’ Parade of Nations is as white as a von Trapp family reunion.

    Davis said he is unfazed. It’s his life now. In many ways he is more comfortable in the Netherlands, where the Dutch appreciate speedskating in a way his home country does not. In fact, he said the only place he gets race questions anymore is in the United States.

    He is an important pioneer here. After all, there had to be a Doug Williams answering awkward questions before we could get to Russell Wilson not being asked a single one, no?

    “I don’t get that when I go to other countries,” Davis said. “They just see me as Shani Davis, skater from Chicago.

    “Maybe in the beginning they saw me as a black speedskater. But my skill and ability surpassed the color of my skin. They respect me for my trials and tribulations of what I’ve done for the sport of skating. I don’t think color is a big part of it anymore.”

    After he finished a disappointing eighth in the 1,000-meter final Wednesday after winning gold in the event the two prior Olympics, I asked him whether he thought there ever would be a next generation of American speedskater — of any color — that would follow in his churning strides.

    “Unfortunately, I don’t think that will ever happen,” he said. “The price of an oval is very [expensive]. It’s not a mainstream sport like football or basketball. It’s not easily accessible like things at the park district. You have to kind of go out of their way to find such things.”

    Is it more troubling for the Winter Games to be the province of the white or of the rich?

    Winter sports are on average much more expensive than outdoor American stick-and-ball sports. But one of the greatest misconceptions about any of these competitions is that the athletes by and large came from affluent, privileged backgrounds.

    I’ve seen and heard too many stories of financial struggle and hardship to buy that. Without benefactors and major sponsorship, most U.S. athletes aren’t here.

    But speaking from a purely egalitarian view, it would be nice to see a country like the United States have its Winter Olympic team someday more accurately represent the diversity of its population — if only because more people would care, watch, read and give someone such as Shani Davis the attention and love he and his sport deserve.

    Otherwise, these Games are going to continue to resemble the inside of a giant snow globe, forever powdery white.
